Commuting is bad enough without having to endure a smelly car. Make your life a little easier with these simple, effective materials for removing car odors, so you can skip the harsh chemicals and expensive cleaning products. Besides, isn't it time to let go of the tacky hanging pine trees?

1) Vinegar - Place a shallow dish (a glass baking pan with high sides is excellent) of half an inch or so of white or apple cider vinegar in the front passenger's well. Leave overnight, with the windows rolled up. Many people like the smell of apple cider vinegar a bit more than plain white vinegar, but either will do. This is a potent cure that's powerful enough to undo the smell of someone being carsick. You may have a bit of vinegar smell left over in the morning, but it usually dissipates in a few hours. And if you've been dealing with something as nasty as carsickness smell, even vinegar will be a welcome change.

2) Baking Soda - Though it has a much mellower smell than vinegar, baking soda is also an extremely effective odor absorber. You can sprinkle it around the carpeting of your car and on the upholstery before you vacuum, or you can use the box the same way you would in a refrigerator. Most of the newer boxes of baking soda have a convenient tab so that you can pull back and expose the baking soda to the air through a bit of something like cheesecloth. It keeps the baking soda in the box, but still lets it absorb that funny lingering smell.

3) Lemon Juice - Citrus smells are used in cleaners all the time because they smell so fresh and clean. You don't have to buy a bottle of fancy cleaner to get this smell though, just one or two lemons is plenty. Squeeze out the juice and pour it on one or two damp wash cloths. Gently wipe all your upholstery and even the windows down with the lemon soaked washcloths. Don't worry if the smell is too strong at first, it will evaporate quickly and in a day or so you'll smell neither the lemons were the original unpleasant odor.

4) Fabric softener sheets - Those funny little napkins you've been throwing into your dryer can also make your car smell is good as clean laundry. Put two or three of them under each seat to keep them out of sight and switch them out every month or two. You can also keep a few extras in the glove compartment to keep that fresh. Surprisingly, fabric softener sheets are also great for polishing chrome, especially after they've been used. You can even use them to dust off the dashboard.
